Grimwyrd Campaign Log 8: Ambush!

drake

[We muddle about with catching up, and the subject of dragons comes up in the pre-session chatter]

11:58AMKen (GM): They are mythical magical creatures of incarnate destruction, sooooo not been seen since the last war at least

11:59AMJoush M.: Ahh.. I had Gray react like a rhino. He sort of believed in them, and he’d heard of them, but had no real concept of what they are. They are on the road, warning everyone they pass HEY, FUCKING DRAGON!

11:59AMAdolf S.: Are they known to be unkillable? Or impervious to gunfire or cannon?

12:01 Ken (GM): They’re not unkillable, but the last war also didn’t have gunfire. The dwarves broke sieges with their thunderous massive bombards, never shot a dragon out of the sky

12:02 Adolf S.: ‘first time for everything, I ‘spose.

12:02 Ken (GM): the tales tell of their hides being quite durable, like armor. But they have soft spots too. They massive beasts; fearsome, but still mortal. Sufficed to say, they served the dark king in the last age; if they’re back, dark things are afoot

12:03 Joush M.: What’s the common knowledge of the dark king and last age?

12:03 Adolf S.: ^

12:06 Ken (GM): He was a mythic creature; some say he was a mighty Orc, striding across the battlefield, ten feet tall and swinging a club carved from a solid oaktree. Others described him as a great black hound, goading on the Lycan and Gnolls, prowling the dark like some massive shaggy wolf. Others still described him as a scaly lizardman, bound in shadows and cloaked in darkness, throwing wicked black fire from his fingertips

12:07 Ken (GM): When the Gray blade felled him, his dark hold on the Beastmen was shattered, and they retreated to their lands like dogs, terror gripping their hearts. The Sword was swung SNICKER SNACK and the king’s head was chopped like wood from his body. They monument to the battle is said to be the final resing place of the remains

The monument your party is within a days ride of seeing, on the way to the Ruins of the Keep

12:08 Joush M.: Well shit. That seems like the kind of tourist attraction that a beastman incursion might want to stop at and get a tee shirt

pexels-photo-534590.jpeg

Ken (GM) WHERE LAST WE LEFT OUR HEROES… The brave adventurers have trekked to nearly the borders of the evil empire itself! The dead wood lies on the horizon, the wastelands of Gorgoth beyond even that. Behind them, an unnamed village now lies barren and abandoned, the residents evacuated alongside the Ro-Haern Rovers. A DRAGON has been spotted on the hillside, terrorizing the lands once again, not seen since the last age. What ill omens with the group face today?

12:24 Ulm: (ask Ulm about ill omens)

Suðri Skornbrekker asks Ulm: “Any ill omens today?“

12:24 P.P. A.: ulm-mind

12:25 Ulm: “One could see many ill omens on anything, depending on one’s perception.” He mutters from under his bone mask.

12:25 Adolf S.: I imagine if a dragon tried to eat Bomrek, it’d be like chewing into a candy with the foil wrapper still on.

(“Oh, some one’s grumpy, wake up on the wrong side of the sacrificial alter today?”)

12:25 Ulm: “I foresaw the dragon, but i must rest now before i attempt to discern the fates of the world once more. Fortunes i can read however.”

12:27 Horsa: (He mutters from under his bane mask.)

Gray walks beside the others, occasionally ranging ahead of the burdened horses and looking back to the abandoned village, the small collection of fleeing refugees before his attention turns to the path again. The masked giant looking to the ogre blooded a moment.

12:27 Adolf S.: What time is it right now?

12:29 Ken (GM): well; you guys travelled after the abandoned village until nightfall, warning all others you met on the road about the dragon, the invaders and implored them all to retreat northward on the highway. So you rode until nightfall, and made camp on the road, just out of the way. And now, this is the morning of the next day; night watch was uneventful, no dragons, no beastmen

12:31 Horsa: no beastmen

12:31 P.P. A.: what

12:31 Ken (GM): “you weren’t ambushed in your sleep”

Gray and Ulm are still with you 😛

12:32 Adolf S.: Lets see, gotta crack my knuckles, stretch, and get back into a dwarf mindset. Guns, alcohol, luxurious beards. Guns alcohol luxurious beards.

Ken (GM) The morning rises gray, and cloudy, with rolling seams of the sky slipping in and out of view through the clouds. The red sunlight of dawn tinging everything with a ruddy glow

Falkirk. rides quietly, eyes to the sky

12:34 Ulm: “The moon is carried unto the long dark, the sun begins the journey again, trying to catch it”

12:35 Ulm: “But only in silence can the sun catch it.”

12:35 Bomrek looks off toward the burnt forest, and calmly fills his pipe with tobacco. “For the first time in a long time, I want to be in the safety of a cave or under-hall more than I want coin.” he takes a puff from his pipe and pauses. “What can we do against something like that?”

Gray walks to the shore of the creek in the dawn light, shaking off water and much cleaner for having bathed. The breast scrubbing himself dry as he tilts his head back. Weather: partial clouds, maybe rain later. Armor and clothes and weapons arrayed out before him, cleaned and ready. He dresses and arms with the familiarity of an old ritual, then goes to join the others. “We might make our goal today. We are close to the last battle of the war with the dark king, aren’t we?”

12:36 Horsa: “Uhh,”

12:36 Ken (GM): Hopefully “says Aachen” we can get to the covers of the ruins, fortify ourselves inside. Make like a tortoise and hide from the sky”

12:36 Ulm: “Indeed, the land is drenched in blood, we are close to the center of the pool.”

12:37 Ken (GM): “By midday we should reach the Statue of the Horned King. From there, we head into the foothills and the ruins by nightfall. Aachen then busies himself with arranging the horses

Gray nods and seems troubled. Nothing he mentions to anyone else, assisting with preparing the horses, loading them with the heavy supplies for the small military group.

12:40 Ken (GM): “Gray, you’re wearing your heart on your sleeve; whats got you so troubled?” Implores Aachen.

Suðri Skornbrekker washed his clothes, himself and his beard (especially his beard) before they departed, and also cleaned his musket, and spent what little idle time he might have had misappropriating the tools for carving cannonballs to work some first-sized rocks into different shapes.

12:40 Ken (GM): [ammo for the cannons is a good idea; roll on armoury +4 for simple task]

Suðri Skornbrekker carves some cannonballs 10v10+4

12:40 Ken (GM): yay! you guys get

rolling 1d6-1 (5)-1 = 4

12:40 Ken (GM): 4 cannonballs out of the creek, shaped and fire-able

12:40 Bomrek: Bomrek gnaws on some dried meat from his pack “You know Elf, I had a thought. So far every wretch we’ve killed hasn’t had more than a shirt and a crude blade. I don’t suppose the beasties closer to their heart land carry gold or jewels on them, do they?”

12:41 Ulm: “Heavy burdens, debts of blood.”

12:42 Ulm: “The beasts carry the dark blood, a jewel of scorn, a toast to the death of all.”

12:42 Ken (GM): “Ive noticed that as well Bomrek; where are their packs? their supplies? How have they ranged this far without bow or arrow? I sincerely doubt they have hunted the entire path, without a horse mind, all this far North”

Gray hadn’t considered that, nodding to the others thoughtfully while he walks. His attention on the path and alert for potental dangers.

12:45 Falkirk: “They are beasts. Perhaps they simply subsist on the air around them. There is no way to know their foul ways.”

12:45 Bomrek: Bomrek takes a last puff from his pipe, knocks the ash out against his boot, and says “Quite the puzzle. Times like that make me glad I’m just paid to shoot.” and walks off toward Souri to inspect the ammunition.

12:45 Ulm: “They spread their blood to bolster their ranks, turn the land against itself, sow discord.”

12:45 Horsa: “They keep their gold somewhere. Everyone does.”

12:46 Ken (GM)Aachen: ‘ A good point Falkirk; they do have fell power behind them. But those who slaughtered the weatherman were merely pups. Mangy dogs. If they had a master he was far gone” Aachen looks worried as he considers the line of thought “What other dark powers are at work, I wonder, if they also have a dragon…”

12:48 Ulm: “They who seek darkness find it in no short supply.”

12:48 Bomrek: “I’m still more concerned for the gold, myself. Horsa’s right, everyone has gold of some amount, it’s just a matter of where they’re storing it.”

Gray gestures south. “Maybe there is no army. Only some terrible disaster in Gorgoth driving everything north, dragons, beast and all.”

12:50 Ken (GM): [ooOOoo paranoia abounds!]

12:50 Horsa: Glances at Ulm and back to Gray. “Must be the smell.”

12:50 Ulm: “Gorgoth is a disaster.” Ulm remarks while in his meditative riding position.

12:50 Suðri Skornbrekker: “In which case everyone left and nobody guards their hoards anymore,” Suðri chuckles as he happily chips away on a rock.

[insert segue full of topical Anti-trump jokes]

12:52 Bomrek: “A cheerful thought, Suðri. Maybe at the end of this ordeal we’ll have a few coins to rub together for it.” Bomrek’s mood improves at the thought of plentiful bounty.

12:52 Suðri Skornbrekker: “Unless they live like animals, hunt and subsist of the wilderness without permanent dwellings or storage. They wouldn’t have much, if any, treasure in that case.” He shrugs. „They do have weapons though, so unless they stole them, they must have mining, and settlements with forges and blacksmiths.”

Falkirk spends the morning in camp pouring over some old-looking scrolls.

Ulm spends the time carving something out of rabbit bones.

12:54 (GM To Falkirk): The Weathermans writing was thready, and his ink seemed homemade where it faded or stained the parchment. Much of his logs so far have been akin to his namesake; weather reports, logs of the stars, charts of wind and rain. Logs. Boring logs

12:55 (GM To Falkirk): this morning you stumble upon something of a bit more substance. Near the end of the last logbook is a series of thaumatological calculations; measures of power, things to do with the higher spheres of the planes of existence themselves. Some of it is scribbled as if in great haste, and it all points to one thing; a great power was felt by the wizard, days before you found him. He was afraid of some massive magical occurrence, coming the day he died

12:56 Bomrek: Bomrek does his usual routine, food, a smoke, and some beard grooming. He listens to the sound of Suori chipping away at the rock, finding it soothing and familiar.

12:56 Ken (GM): Aachen chimes in” If they live much like our friend Ulm, I’d imagine they spend more time in ritual and tribal dispute rather than building stone or steel.”

12:57 Ken (GM): “No offence oh great Bloody Eye of the South” he says with a wink

Gray shifts his great weight and listens to the conversation around him.

12:57 Bomrek: “Bah, surely they must have some civilization. You can’t rightly make blades and armor – crude as they may be – by living in a tent made of sticks.” he untangles a couple knots in his beard and grunts angrily at them, before setting them straight.

12:58 Ulm: “None taken.” He says lazily while binding some bones with string.

12:58 Ulm: “They could all live like me. But only a few would be chosen to carry out Their will.”

12:58 GM  (GM To Falkirk): roll on thaumatology +2?

12:58  (From Falkirk): 11v13

12:59   (GM To Falkirk): The weatherman was plotting out something he was observing; something was puncturing the veil between this realm and another magical realm. Most likely the spirits, maybe another. But it was travelling with great regularity, and he was gauging the distances and logging its course. It looks like someone or something was making regular trips, coming out at a regular place as well. If you had a map and did some measurements, you’d know where

1:00  (From Falkirk): What are the implications of this, and what kind of map would I need?

1:00   (GM To Falkirk): Navigation: Land at +2 given the stuff you have on hand. Someone is doing some big magic, and you can pinpoint where

1:01 Bomrek: “I hope they have settlements. More straight forward to just bomb a village or city than it is to seek out enemies in a forest or hillside. A large iron ball does it’s job very well and can smash through defenses, but does a much poorer job hitting targets we can’t see or don’t notice.”

1:02 Ulm: “I do not recall us going on a journey of destroying homes.”

1:02 Ken (GM): “true; its much easier to face the enemy in his home instead of afield” the elf adds “But these tribes are so scattered; the outlanders have never seen more than a handful at a time, and they tend to scatter when confronted”

Gray speaks in that deep, carrying voice. “For now, let’s get to the ruins and see what we have to work with.”

1:02  (From Falkirk): 11v 11

1:03   (GM To Falkirk): the magic is happening at the Ruins! Someone is breaching the veil and travelling in and out of the realms from there! Glardenfen! Your math puts it in some few square miles, right around there on the map

1:03 Horsa: “As a ground rule, we’re not shooting the ruins.”

1:03 Suðri Skornbrekker: “If they do not have homes and walls, they are not going to have siege weapons to tear them down either. Plant a few castles and walled cities in the area, chop down their forests, drain their swamps, and watch their numbers dwindle before the might of civilization!”

Falkirk frowns as he goes through the scrolls, rubbing a hand through his hair

1:04 Bomrek: “Things can change, Shaman. One day you’re out on patrol looking for smugglers, the next you’re burning down a cottage full of plotters against the king.” he inspects his beard with his very expensive mirror, smiles, and puts it away. “The only true constants I’ve found are the value of gold coin, the power of black powder, and the bite of cheap alcohol.”

1:05 Ulm: “Perhaps it is true. All of your examples are means to an end as well.” He ponders and goes back to finishing his arts and crafts project.

Gray speaks to Suðri. “Building anything in Gorgoth would be difficult without monsters striking at you. It’s a very rough place.”

1:07 Bomrek: “Aye, that’s what we need, some strong stone and able shooters. We’d have this land tamed in a year.” Bomrek says toward Suðri.

Suðri Skornbrekker imagines, with a smile under his beard, towers rising to the sky, and soldiers shooting hordes of beastmen safely from their walls.

Falkirk splays out an array of charts, scrolls and maps, looking deeply concerned as he mutters under his breath

1:09 Ken (GM): “Master Falkirk, we’re packing to GO, not setup paper tents. What are you up to?” Asks the Elf

1:10 Falkirk: “A moment more, I must confirm this. It might be the difference between life and death.”

1:10 Ulm: “Both states are surprisingly fleeting on this earth. What is the matter?”

Falkirk roughly scratches his beard as he measures some distances between charts using his fingers

1:11 Bomrek: Bomrek looks between the others, and then back toward Falkirk. “Found the cure for a bald chin, Doctor?”

1:12 Falkirk: “Perhaps I am mistaken, but from what I can discern of the writings of the late weatherman… someone or something has been making regular cross-planar journeys. The point they’ve been travelling through has been the same ruins we’re heading for.”

“The implications of this I’m unsure of though.”

Ulm thinks of the implications. 12 vs. 16 (Occultism)

1:13   (GM To Ulm): Occultism tells you that powerful rites worked at regular intervals implies someone is working a large amount of mojo; if they’re storing it, it’s for something big. If it’s a working, they’ve already done a lot

1:13 Horsa: “More death balls?”

1:13 Bomrek: “Cross-what?” Bomrek looks genuinely concerned now. “Whatever it is, can we blow it up?”

Suðri Skornbrekker was about to ask as well.

1:14 Falkirk: “I’m interpreting the notations of a somewhat distractible mind. I’m not sure of anything here.”

1:15 Ken (GM): [anyone wanna dig in with thaumatology on it?]

1:15 Falkirk: 16v11

oh ok 😦

1:16   (GM To Falkirk): nothing more to tell you than what you’ve already deduced :/

Gray frowns, considering a moment. Horsa’s suggestion makes sense to him and he scowls. “Damn.”

1:16 Ulm: “Someone is holding a large amount of power in his palm. They either storing it somewhere, or they have already made progress unimaginable.”

1:16   (GM To Falkirk): but another working like the unleashed elemental? that could fit maybe

1:17 Ulm: “We must be wary, only a powerful sorcerer can accomplish this at regular intervals.”

1:17   (GM To Ulm): BIG SACRIFICES. Large or plentiful 😉

1:18  (From Ulm): Ye boi

1:18 Ken (GM): “well shit” says the elf, flatly

“Youre sure this comes from the ruins?” He asks falkirk “The math holds out?”

1:19 Ulm: “I only dare to imagine the sacrifices required for such an amount of rituals.”

1:19 Bomrek: “So what does all this mean? Sorcerers bleed like any other man, don’t they? Lets just kill him and collect our pay.” Bomrek says after a moment of thinking on the situation.

1:19 Falkirk: “As far as I can tell.” He sighs “It’s hard to be sure.”

Gray speaks to Bomrek. “Means magic, things like what required a blood sacrifice at the Weatherman’s tower.”

1:20 Ulm: “No, they bleed better than all men combined. That is their most terrifying ally.”

e7b69962ec52615bca2ec984797d4836.jpg

1:21 Ken (GM): “Well then, lets get them bloody” says Aachen, a vulpine grin on his face “MOUNT UP” he shouts to the group, hefting himself onto his horse

“WE RIDE FOR THE KEEP!”

Ulm mounts the hose and equips his newly crafted amulet, though it is yet to function in any meaningful way.

Suðri Skornbrekker stuffs any equipment/ammunition left lying around into their proper place and climbs his horse

Falkirk begins packing up his papers, a haggard expression worn

Gray nods and finishes the packing, letting ‘his’ horse work in line with the others, loaded with supplies, as he ranges ahead of the others a hundred yards or so, sharp senses reaching out as he hunts for dangers on their path.

1:23 Ulm: “To think someone is sustaining these rituals, it inspires jealousy in my heart, to be able to pay a tribute so grand to Them.”

Ken (GM) Aachen whoops in his elven way, and the horses spur forward, excited and nearly breaking for a run at the call. He directs you along the kings highway, as fast as can be allowed, pushing you all to keep careful watch out. The enemy is close now. You need to be careful

1:25 Adolf S.: (“We ride we ride we ride – we ride – we ride for the keep / the bloodied battered beastmen corpses lay beneath our feet / Off to Glardenfen to fight and kill who we might meeeet~ / Our guns belching fire as we take back the keep”)

>To the tune of ghost riders in the Sky. I’m on a blues brothers kick~

Ken (GM) as the day rolls on, the Steppe rolls away beneath you. The dwarven song ringing in your bones.

1:25 Ulm: (good taste in spooky western songs)

Ken (GM) as the day passes on, light rain begins. The clouds seem to weep at your coming, thickening to darken the sky, the day dim and wet

1:26 Bomrek: (can’t go wrong with the blues brothers, Hyll, you Finns seem to understand that)

Gray adjusts his hat and seems unbothered by the wet that darkens his surcoat, the beast kneeling down to check the path then rising and moving ahead as the weather seems to match his dark mood.

Ulm continues meditating like a rock, wrapped in his soggy bison pelt

1:28 Bomrek: “This rain isn’t good for our guns. Remind me to pay careful attention to our cannon when we next have rest.”

Falkirk takes advantage of the precipitation to wash some of the blood from his ragged burlap robe

1:29 Ken (GM): Aachen asks Gray to stay close, as the rain is impeding vision and he want s you close to the party

Gray cuts the distance to about ten yards without comment, staying close enough to the group to avoid getting separated.

Suðri Skornbrekker wraps himself in his simple cape, hoping that his armor doesn’t get rusty

Ken (GM) the road cuts into a thatch of wood, in the belly of a bowl in the steppe. Dead trees from the last war mingle black in with the green, fresh with rain

Ken (GM) you are passing a large rock when…

1:31 Ken (GM): PERCEPTION CHECKS

1:31 Ulm: 11 vs. 13

1:32 Falkirk: 9v10

1:32 Bomrek:

rolling 3d6 (5+1+3)= 9

1:32 Falkirk: ayy

1:32 Bomrek: Pass

1:32 Horsa: 13v10

1:33 Ken (GM): Aachen is rolling 3d6 (4+6+5)= 15 fail!

1:33 Suðri Skornbrekker: 5v11

1:33 Bomrek: Too busy trying to figure out how to best hide his beardless chin, surely embarrassed by having two dwarves nearby.

1:35 Gray:

rolling 3d6 (2+6+6)= 14

((Damn it, that’s a fail for perception))

1:36 Ken (GM): SUDDENLY

1:36 Ken (GM): THE UNDERBRUSH IS ALIVE WITH MOVEMENT! AMBUSH!

1461479362505.jpg

1:36 Ken (GM): Initiative from those who passed perception!

1:36 Ken (GM): those who failed have been surprised!

d6+basic speed! keep the decimals!

[there is some dicking about with dice here, and an explanation of +2 for init from one member having Combat Reflexes]

Ken (GM) the rain falls in thick bullets of fat rain, as the foliage around you erupts in motion! Beastmen! An Ambush!

1:42 Ken (GM): “KILL THEM ALL!” screeches a cloaked figure on the top of the stone outcropping. It’s hands wave madly in the air, clawed and cloaked in magical looking darkness!

1:42 Bomrek: (“Shoot here”, got it~)

Ken (GM) stepping from around the rock is a massive Bull-headed man, wielding a great axe; it screams a bovine bellow, spraying froth and spittle

Ken (GM) beastmen burst form the underbrush, rushing Gray!

1:43 Falkirk: no map?

1:43 Ken (GM): ffs

1:43 Bomrek: ^

1:43 Ken (GM): boop, map [at this point I forced everyone’s Roll20 view to the new page. Still getting the hand of Roll20 controls at this point]

1:44 Falkirk: oh there we go

1:44 Ken (GM): derp

1:44 Bomrek: Precious sight!

1:44 Falkirk: I was wondering if we were gonna ToM

1:44 Ken (GM): hahah

so yeah, the beastmen yell, come out of hiding, and there they are on the map; one gets close enough to swing at Gray, who can defend at -2 for surprise

1:45 Gray: rolling 3d6 (1+4+2)= 7

1:45 Ken (GM): [ the beastmen appear armored, with shields and picks. the minotaur is unarmored, but for a loincloth and a greataxe]

rolling 3d6 (6+1+3)= 10

Gray lifts a shield to block the blow and roars in return.

1:46 Bomrek: >minotaur

OH boy

1:46 Ken (GM): woo! gray blocks the blow! the pick grazes the wood

Skornbrekker!

1:47 Bomrek: Ayy, are you sure you’ve got that right GM? Looks like Bomrek’s got initiative over’m, unless you’re organizing this different

1:47 P.P. A.: Hm, what penalties are there for firing a musket from horseback, and in the rain?

1:47 Ken (GM): MATH

Its bomrek!

1:47 Horsa: lol

1:47 Bomrek: Woo

1:47 Ken (GM): derpo

1:47 P.P. A.: dwarfs all rook same

1:47 Falkirk: pretty sure mounted combat is riding or the relevant skill, whichever is lower

1:47 Horsa: I’m not even on the chart 😦

1:47 Bomrek: Okay. I’m not familiar with fighting on horse back. Am I right in assuming that there’s a penalty to do this?

1:48 Ken (GM): yes; you’ll likely want to dismount

1:48 Bomrek: Mmm. I dismount then. Does that take a whole turn? Does it allow any further movement?

>8-ish years of GURPS and this has literally never come up before

1:49 Ken (GM): you’re just swinging off the horse; drop a check against riding and it can be just a step

for a quick dismount

1:49 Falkirk: page 396 in Campaigns has the mounted combat rules

1:49 Bomrek: rolling 3d6 (5+5+6)= 16

Well that’s a failure

I assume I stumble off the horse instead?

1:50 Joush M.: the comedy of errors begins

1:50 Ken (GM): you jump off, but don’t kill yourself

1:50 Ken (GM): [nearly though :S]

pass turn? or anything quick you wanna try to get in?

1:50 Horsa: The horse laughs at you

1:51 Bomrek: Hm. “Shit!”, end turn.

1:51 Ken (GM): kk

SKORNBREKKER (ACTUALLY)

1:52 Gandalf G.: rip joush

Suðri Skornbrekker dismounts! 8v10

1:52 Ken (GM): yay!

with a hop you are down!

Suðri Skornbrekker immediately sticks his bardiche into the ground and starts aiming at the— holy shit a minotaur

Suðri Skornbrekker considered the sorcerer but the minotaur seems to be a more immediate threat, also a larger and juicier target

1:53 Ken (GM): awesome! ULM

1:53  (From Ulm): Is 9 or 10 the target number for Ally summon

1:53 Ken (GM): 9!

1:54  (From Ulm): Can i spend FP to sway that to 10

1:54   (GM To Ulm): unfortunately no

1:54  (From Ulm): This’ll be a treat

Ulm does the sensible thing he would do in his position, and swings out his knife. He slits his wrist in a horizontal direction to call for help. (Invoking LUCK) 15 vs. 9

1:56 Ulm: 12 vs. 9

1:56 Bomrek: I wonder, should we kill the minotaur first, or the magic asshole?

1:56 Ulm: (well it was worth a shot)

1:56 Ken (GM): you get three tries!

try one more1

1:57 Ulm: 10 vs. 9

1:57 Horsa: ulm is an emo kid

1:57 Ulm: (kill me rn)

1:57 Ken (GM): BOOOOO to the dice gods

1:57 Horsa: LOL

Ken (GM) Ulms invocation to the blood spirits is weak, diluted in the rain. They fail to answer his magical call

1:57 Falkirk: “Perhaps not the best time to exsanguinate, all things considered!”

1:58 Ulm: “The pact is not strong enough yet . . . my calls are in vain.” He laments.

(do i have actions left?)

1:58 Ken (GM): (if you wanna risk a fall off the horse? try riding to hop down in a rush)

1:59 Ulm: (what’s the default)

1:59 Ken (GM): lol DX

1:59 Ulm: (nice, any modifiers)

1:59 Falkirk: dx-5

animal handling -3

1:59 P.P. A.: >cut yourself

>fall off the horse into a puddle of your own blood

>the rain cries on you

1:59 Ken (GM): yes, ty

1:59 Ulm: (in that case i have to get snake eyes to succeed)

1:59 Ken (GM): hahahah dont try it then 😛 play it safe

2:00 Ulm: (yeah no EoT)

2:00 Horsa: Do it

2:00 Ulm: (He has a bad leg)

2:00 Ken (GM): FALKIRK!

Dark sorcerers! beastmen! a Minotaur!

Falkirk attempts to lithely hop off his horse 12v11

2:00 Falkirk: lame

2:00 Ken (GM): fwump

down you go, unsteadily

2:00 P.P. A.: lithely, he said

2:01 Ken (GM): lithe, like a rock

2:01 P.P. A.: hehehe

2:01 Ken (GM): left or right?

Falkirk quietly curses the combination of thick fabrics and water

2:01 Falkirk: My right

2:02 Falkirk: I assume that takes my manouver, so yeah

2:02 Horsa: “Oh shit bandits oh shit these guys suck at dismounting”

2:02 Ken (GM): Horsa! Gray! Aachen! Roll versus combat stun! (gray is at +4 for Combat reflexes)

2:02 Ulm: “Perhaps the time was not opportune, the moon is still screaming.”

2:02 Ken (GM): IQ roll! rolling 3d6 (4+3+1)= 8 Aachen shakes off the surprise!

2:03 Horsa: 12

2:03 Ken (GM): boo! gray? vs 12?

2:04   (GM To Gray): poke poke

2:05 Ken (GM): [wtf happened to joush?]

Gray moves with a brutal economy of motion, the well-practiced slash slamming into the Beastman, attention roaming the battlefield, looking a moment to the mage. He is beset on all sides; the others will have to handle that.

2:41 Ken (GM): “FOOLS! INCOMPOTENTS!” Screams the cloaked man; the swirling blackness enfolds him, and he disappears with a PLIP

2:47 Ken (GM): yeah, full move; youre gun lays behind ya

2:47 P.P. A.: ok (I doubt there’s going to be enough enemies left at the end of this turn for me to try out melee, though)

2:48 Ken (GM): lol ULM

2:48 Ulm: (are there still home owners to slay)

2:48 Ken (GM): 2 down south; in a bad way , only one will probably survive

[if they dont take it prisoner…]

Ulm walks up to the minotaur body and figures whether he can fix a good ol’ family style blood sacrifice out of it. Maybe the horse too.

2:50 Bomrek: Lets have a horse BBQ

2:50 Ulm: (no, They need tribute)

2:50 Ken (GM): dropping to a knee? starting to perform blood rights?

2:50 Falkirk: Horse isn’t dead yet. Horse isn’t going to get the chance to die.

2:50 Ulm: (YOUR BLOOD HAS THE RIGHT TO REMAIN SILENT)

2:50 P.P. A.: in loving memory of cancer horse

2:50 Falkirk: You’ve never given up on anything in your life dammit, dont give up on me now.

2:50 Ken (GM): lol [HORSE FIGHT]

falkirk? do you stave off death?

Ulm starts drawing a sacrificial circle in the minotaur to give the guy as tribute to his Masters.

2:51 Falkirk: I’ll begin a second attempt, taking 15 seconds to do so, buying off the -3 for repeat attempts and getting a +1 left over

so concentrate maneuver

2:52 Horsa: Lmao ulm can’t even wait for the fighting to stop to rack up the blood points

2:52 Ulm: (it’s gonna pay off more than your acting career)

2:52 Ken (GM): kk; dont get interrupted! Falkirk lays his hands on the horse’s head, muttering incantations.

2:52 Ken (GM): Aachen! “DIE BEAST” hacks with sword

2:54 Horsa: I move up on my horse

(horse comes along)

2:54 Ken (GM): kk, should be move 5 with load

2:55 Ken (GM): boop GRAY

Gray wears blood well, in some ways far more at home here, marked with blood and death, then in the cities and hamlets of humanity. Blood drips from the dark surcoat, not for the first time, and falls from the long, heavy blade. The blood splashes the beastmen as he slashes hard..

2:56 Gray: rolling 3d6 (2+2+6)= 10 Striking the beastmen’s weapon

2:57 Gray: rolling 3d6+1 (2+1+3)+1 = 7 Intimidate

2:57 Falkirk: if you’re trying to subdue the guy, I’d suggest grappling his ass to the ground

2:58 Ken (GM): snicker snack, pick is in pieces

Gray growls to the disarmed beastmen. “Surrender. This is over.”

2:58 Bomrek: Kick the enemies until they don’t move anymore. Best way to subdue

2:58 Ulm: “Yes, an alive one will do just fine.”

2:58 Ken (GM): rolling 3d6 (4+1+1)= 6 Will vs intimidate

3:02 Bomrek: Hm. That one who backed away from Gray, how wounded is he?

3:02 Ken (GM): he took a chop to the shoulder, for 3

3:03 Bomrek: Is he on the ground? The whole being sideways thing sorta implies it.

3:03 Ken (GM): sorry, no, he turned and is facing you guys is all [Still figuring out tokens here]

3:03 Bomrek: If he is, I’ll walk a few steps toward him, pointing my musket at him, and basically yell at him to stay down- ah

3:03 Ken (GM): face meant he was down

off now

3:03 Bomrek: Well that makes it simpler then, I shoot him in the leg.

3:03 Ken (GM): lol, -2!

dang! he skips just out of your shot (he was all out +2 towards his shield too :P) dodgy beastmen! SKORN!

3:06 P.P. A.: Question: if my weapon says (for one kind of attack) “2, 3*”, does that mean I need to make a ready action whenever I attack 3 hexes away, or only if I attacked at a different range and now need to switch?

3:06 Ken (GM): lol your weapons has reach 2 or 3 and you can attack at either reach without issue

3:06 Falkirk: pretty sure it takes a ready to swit-

or not ok

3:07 Ken (GM): ah yeah, * means switching between them

(hard to read text, my bad :P)

3:07 P.P. A.: ah, so only when switching, ok

3:07 Ken (GM): Ill assume the weapon is held at 3? step and shank?

3:07 Falkirk: there is a perk , lets you switch freely

3:16 Bomrek: Now I regret firing off that second shot.

Ulm bows gently. “Greetings, i have prepared tribute.”

Falkirk looks up from his horse with a furrowed brow

Horsa turns around. “Whut.”

3:17 Falkirk: is it a tongue I speak? I speak a lotta tongues

3:17 Ulm: “Do not worry friends, he will guard us until dawn.”

3:17 Ken (GM): the conscious beastman by Gray screams in fear FALKIRK! Still saving the horse?

3:21 Ken (GM): but nobody else gets kicked or thrown HORSA!

3:21 Falkirk: “Can you PLEASE stop KILLING the horses. I’m not a VET.”

3:22 Horsa: I go up this far and dismount

3:22 Suðri Skornbrekker: “The casualties are mounting, and the mounts are casualties.”

3:22 Bomrek: “No, continue, I haven’t had a good meal in a week!” Bomrek says jovially, despite the fucking demon.

3:22 Horsa: I dismount into the space in front of my token. I’m a quick boy, hop off 10v13

3:23 Ken (GM): woo! works out for you, youre on the ground safe

3:25 Ken (GM): hahah okay, between that much damage and critical hits n such, beastman is roughly in two pieces… lulz. step?

Gray bashes the beastmen’s shield aside then takes off his head, something made less elegent then it sounds when bones are smashed and crushed and broken by the impact.

3:26 Ken (GM): CRUNCH

3:26 Bomrek: We gotta’ interrogate these shits so as to find out where Mr.Magic went!

3:27 Falkirk: “You can’t buy a horse out in the wild, and we need to transport our supplies. I’m prioritizing here.”

3:27 Joush M.: With easy to read, that motivation is pretty clear.

3:26 Ken (GM): the last one, leg missing, continues screaming BOMREK!

3:28 Bomrek: Oh boy. I suppose I walk over and try to see if the Elf’s broken or not. Also; I say “Damn the supplies, we have enough carry capacity, but we need to get information from this vile creature, it’s too important to disregard.” and then much quieter “Come on Aachen, lets see if you’re okay.”

3:28 Ken (GM): Aachen is down, seems hes got the wind out of him, but he’s alive

3:29 Joush M.: Are we out of combat now?

3:29 Ken (GM): THE DEMON GOES

3:30 Ken (GM): it hisses in a feral rage, fangs bared on inch long teeth SKORNBREKKER!

Suðri Skornbrekker has tried to show tolerance for Ulm’s weird actions, but this definitely crosses two lines at once.

3:30 Bomrek: “Well it looks like he’s about to eat our only prisoner!”

3:31   (GM To Ulm): you may want to order it to stop, they’re not wrong

Ulm commands the demon. “Stop!”

3:31 Suðri Skornbrekker: “What the fuck.”

3:31 Ulm: “Take the fallen one.”

“The fallen beast man, that is.”

3:32 Ken (GM): At Ulms command, the demon stops, freezing with the beastman in it’s grasp

Suðri Skornbrekker drags Aachen away from the blood demon just in case.

3:32 Ken (GM): Aachen gladly goes with you

3:32 Horsa: Horsa quick draws 9v13

3:32 P.P. A.: oh, I thought he was out cold?

3:32 Horsa: He nervously points the sword at the daemon

3:32 Ken (GM): [aachen just took a fall to the back, he’s good. the horse broke a leg]

3:32 P.P. A.: ah, ok

3:32 Bomrek: Lets turn the horse into glue, We can make our money back on it

3:33 Ken (GM): the demon holds the beastman firm in it’s grasp; it grins a large toothy grin and speaks in that dark tongue again

3:33   (GM To Ulm): “Shall i drink this one master?”

Suðri Skornbrekker still helps him get back up and walk a few meters away in case he’s still dazed

Ulm calmly approaches the demon again.

Gray flicks blood from the sword and looks between Ulm and the bloody daemon. Circling closer and speaking to Horsa. “Step away from that thing, Young Noble.”

3:34  (From Ulm): No you may not, he is vital to us. You may take the dead horse instead if it so pleases you.

3:34 Ulm: “I recommend stepping away from the dead horse, my friend.”

Horsa takes a step back, sword still in hand

3:34   (GM To Ulm): “it does”

3:34 Ken (GM): the demon drops the beastman

and pounces on the horse with a broken leg

and tears into it like a wild thing

3:34 Horsa: EUGH

3:35 Ken (GM): the scene is gory, and disturbing amounts of screams come from the horse, even after it should be dead from its wounds FALKIRK! one will roll vs. that disturbance please

3:35 Falkirk: I’d say 15 seconds have passed, can I make my rolls?

3:35 Suðri Skornbrekker: “What an abomination!” Suthri is aghast and disgusted.

3:35 Falkirk: oh okay

3:35 Falkirk: 9v10

3:35 Ken (GM): nice

Gray snarls at Ulm from behind his steel mask. “End this! Banish that thing!”

3:35 Ken (GM): you focus your thoughts past the grossness

noises continue

Falkirk furrows in concentration

3:36 Ulm: “An inevitable sacrifice for the protection granted by Them. He will be the key to defeating the sorcerer.”

3:36 Ken (GM): splorch, rend, crack scream

3:36 Bomrek: Bomrek looks only mildly disturbed “Waste of good horse flesh, like feeding a dog with A-Grade cuts.”

3:36 Horsa: “This is evil magic, Ulm!”

3:36 Ken (GM): [the unattended horses move away from the demon, inherently afraid of its power]

3:37 Bomrek: “Somebody go catch the fucking horses!” he ends the sentence with a few dwarven curses.

3:37 Ulm: “Such is the nature of the screaming moon. I recommend we make haste for the ruins, he will prove his bottomless value to us.”

Gray steps closer to Ulm. “Lord Horsa is right. You embrace evil and sacrifice eagerly… The horses are burdened. They will stop together soon.”

Ulm is delighted by his guest but refrains from touching his meal.

3:38 Horsa: “You’re a god damn freak, you ogre bastard.”

3:38 Bomrek: Bomrek glances at Suori and speaks in Dwarven “Load your gun, we might have to shoot more, soon.”

3:38 Falkirk: 11v17 for the healing element

Suðri Skornbrekker goes and picks his musket back up, nods at Bomrek

3:38 Ken (GM): Aachen chases down horses, soothing their fears

3:38 Falkirk: 8v9 for vetenarian WOOP WOOP

3:38 Ken (GM): yeah

3:38 Joush M.: Falkirk, Horse Surgon

3:39 Falkirk: and that’s 4FP for 8HP

3:39 Bomrek: Bomrek starts reloading his gun as well.

3:39 Ken (GM): yay! the horses wound closes, tenderly, and it gets up with your help

Suðri Skornbrekker cleans his musket inside and outside and reloads it. He tries to distract himself from what he just saw and heard.

3:39 Ken (GM): it will need to rest and heal, but its not gonna die right away

Falkirk wipes his brow as he slowly stands, visibly wearied

3:40 Ulm: “Now my friends, we are honored by the presence of a mutual friend. He will guard us from the evils of this land with great fervor, but the pact ends at dawn.”

3:40 Falkirk: “At dawn? Does that mean he returns or that you lose his… loyalty?”

Ken (GM) the exsanguinated corpse of the horse lays before you, drained of all blood, deflated and shrunk against its bones and meat

Ulm looks almost jovial. “What a time of joy it is, to be blessed on the hour of the scream.” He looks at Falkirk. “He travels back to where he came from, as he has ended his part of the contract.”

Ken (GM) the demon stands to its full height, gurgling feverishly and grinning madly

3:41 Horsa: Will check vs vomiting 10v10 Horsa spews a little

3:41 Suðri Skornbrekker: “I wouldn’t ever want to call a monster like that a ‘friend’.”

Suðri Skornbrekker scoffs angrily.

3:42 Falkirk: “This horse will survive. I fear there isn’t much I can do for the other one. Which of these beastmen am I to heal next?

Gray looks to the others, as if taking a silent vote. The bestial warrior is prepared to fight the blood-gorged deamon, rolling a shoulder and watching it’s quicksilver form. “Do we banish Ulm and his ‘friend’? Do we fight them, here and now?”

Suðri Skornbrekker shoulders his weapons and goes to help Aachen lead the horses back to the group.

3:42  (From Ulm to the demon): “These people, their horses, their valuables are sacred. You will guard them from anything with harmful intent except if the intent comes from themselves.”

3:42 Ken (GM): the demon leaps and pounces away to the perch on the rock above you, seeming disinterested in the group, sniffing at the rainy sky

3:43   (GM To Ulm): the beast calls back “yes master; they are all safe for now

3:43 Horsa: Whispering to Gray “If you do it, I’m right behind you.”

3:43 Ken (GM): it barks in its infernal tongue between ulm and itself; it looks at each of you in turn and smiles deeply

3:43  (From Ulm to the demon): “You will continue to guard them and you will follow us from a distance, until your contract ends.”

3:44 Bomrek: Bomrek visibly relaxes his posture, pulls out his pipe and starts loading in some tobacco. “Come now, we’ve seen worse than this within the last week. I can say I’ve seen far worse in the past. Saw a cannon ball take off a child’s head once, a horse being torn into is nothing. You’d see the same things if you spy on wolves from afar in the forests.”

3:44   (GM To Ulm): “yes master”

3:44 Ken (GM): the demon pounces off into the rainy trees, out of sight

3:44 Ulm: “We are honored to have him guard us, show gratitude and accept his benevolence. Now, we should move on, we have nothing to fear anymore.”

3:45 Ulm: (VADE RETRO SATANAS)

3:45 Falkirk: this beastman here is injured?

3:46 Ken (GM): yeah, hes down like, 9

3:46 Falkirk: unconcious?

3:46 Ken (GM): i think they wanted to save him from bleeding to death? hes screamed himself unconscious, yes, and seems to have soiled himself

Gray nods to Horsa, waiting a moment then letting a breath out as the daemon flees. To Ulm, he speaks. “No thanks. No friendship. Keep your daemon away and do not call more darkness into this world.” He demands sternly, then almost reluctantly he wipes down the blade and sheaths, rain washing the blood from his surcoat. “Do you require assistance, physician?”

3:47 Ulm: “Darkness? No, never have. I call the blood to us, they are on our side. But i will do as you wish.”

3:47 Falkirk: “Does anybody have rope? I’ll bring this beastman back onto his feet, is he’s tied up.”

Suðri Skornbrekker finds his horse and reaches into his backpack in its saddlebags. “Here,” he says, helps tie up the beastman.

Gray nods, taking a long line of cord from his pack and tossing it to Falkirk. “Here”

Bomrek takes a few puffs from his pipe, and says to Ulm “Shaman, just how strong is that.. thing. Demon? Could it survive a musketball to the face?”

Ulm goes to his horse and caresses it before mounting it calmly- “It does not understand strength like you do. I am not sure if these balls can even harm him. Do not worry, he will protect you from fire-lances.”

3:49 Horsa: “Aachen? Where’s Aachen? This has to be severely against the church.”

Falkirk catches the rope and moves to tie the beast’s hands

3:49 Bomrek: “Aachen has a church?” Bomrek asks with some aloofness in his tone.

Falkirk then rolls his blooded sleeves up, laying on hands and quietly whispering

3:49 Ken (GM): “No church I belong to, son of Man” He says “What Ulm did here is sacred to his people, and to mine. Though we dont tend to call such forceful and angry things into existence” says Aachen

3:50 Ulm: “His force is what drives our efforts forward, the strength in our blood that shall overcome the dark.”

3:50 Bomrek: Bomrek’s face cracks into a grin, and then laughs. “You mean to tell me the Elves worship the same gods as the beastfolk?” he seems to be greatly amused by this.

3:50 Falkirk: 15 seconds concentrating on healing again, burning 4 more FP.

3:50 Ken (GM): kk that gonna knock you on your ass?

3:51 Falkirk: 10v15

Nah

I’m 1 point above tired

3:51 Ken (GM): cool, the Beastman’s leg wound closes and his slash as well. Hes alive, bound, and interrogatable

3:51 Ken (GM): “there are no gods, dwarf, only the spirits, and their plans. They are like us, only made of power, not form. Ulm is a shaman of the blood. he uses blood to call them into form”

3:51 Horsa: tips

3:51 Bomrek: He leans over a little bit, patting his belly through his chain mail. “We always thought you lot must worship the trees or grass or something.”

3:51 Ulm: “I never expected you to understand, all I ask for you is to not test our mutual friend, I can only control him so much when his allegiance is put under question.”

Gray shakes his head. “Of course you can’t. It’s a fucking daemon that humors your thoughts of friendship and control and will devour you the moment you laps or weaken”

Bomrek lays his gun across his shoulder like Souri and starts going through the camp’s contents. Anything of note?

Falkirk breathes ragged, clearly drained from the magics, he stands shakily and moves towards a nearby log to sit, vaguely gesturing at the tied-up beastman

Ken (GM) the beastman camp is a sodden affair; the fire is out cold, and the tents are carved from hides and log

Ulm chuckles at Gray’s comment. “I advise you to regain your trust with mortal men before you try to regain it with spirits, my friend.”

Horsa gets away from the desecrated horse corpse

Gray offers a bottle to Falkirk for the older man to recover his strength as the small camp is searched. Gray’s eyes search the horizon, the trees and bushes around them.

Ken (GM) inside each is little more than a den of furs and hides. prodding through them, you reveal a sealed ebony-wood box with a brass inlay! It is heavy, and has sigils written on it’s surface in a strange dialect

3:54 Bomrek: “I’ve shit in scratch-made latrines better than this. Look how shoddy all this is!” he kicks at one of the tents a little, looking around like a drill master inspecting new guardsmen.

“Oi, I’ve found something worth looking at.” he lifts up the box and dusts it off. Is it locked?

Gray bites back a harsh reply to Ulm and stares to the edge of the woods, ready, alert, meeting the gaze of the daemon a moment.

3:57 Ken (GM): the box is not locked, inside is a plush red velvet surface, form fit, holding a shining clear sphere of some kind of crystal. Carved on the surface is a single rune of the same strange dialect

‘Ive tied up the horses, anything of note in the camp?” asks Aachen

3:58 Bomrek: “Shaman, Doctor, I found something. I think it’s more magic shit.” he calls to them, walking over the container.

Ulm rides over to the container to inspect magic feces.

Horsa sits on the rock and looks off in the direction of Greyhold.

Falkirk continues sitting, catching his breath

3:59   (GM To Horsa): home is far, far away now. The gray skies reveal nothing

3:59  (From Horsa): ;_;

3:59 Bomrek: I’m suddenly imagining Ulm as really fat and immobile, and his horse like an electric scooter, basically necessary to his easy mobility.

3:59 Ken (GM): lol

3:59 Bomrek: Bomrek shows the box to the two magic men. “What do you make of it?”

4:00 Falkirk: he’d need one of those grabby arms in the basket to grab things with

4:00 Ulm: (Ulm is very lanky but he has a malformed left leg, To an ogre he might look emaciated)

4:00   (GM To Falkirk): you recognize the runes and symbols on the box; Old Gorgoth. “It is a sacred object contained within beware heathens!” the ball is carves with one rune “Blood/Sacrifice/supplication” carved in demonic script

4:01 Falkirk: “Old…” He wipes his brow “It’s Old Gorgoth.”

4:01 Ulm: (what’s the item tho)

4:01   (GM To Ulm): you read neither language written on the box or globe

4:01 Bomrek: A crystal ball sorta thing,

4:01 Falkirk: “The box I’d say is…” he breathes loudly “It says the following: “It is a sacred object contained within; beware, heathens.”

4:02 Bomrek: Like a dragon ball but crystal and with a single rune.

Gray ask Falkirk. “What are the implications of that? Can you tell what it says?” Not a clever beast, so he ask only simple questions.

4:02 Ulm: (can i roll theology)

4:02 Bomrek: We need to find the other 6 dragon balls and put them together to get a wish.

Ken (GM) THUNDER, FOLLOWED QUICKLY BY LIGHTNING, ACROSS THE SKY!

4:02 Ulm: 12 vs. 15 (Theology)

4:03 Falkirk: “And if I had to guess… If I had to guess, that’s the rune representing blood and sacrifice on the ball itself.”

Falkirk waves his hand dismissively, slumping back down

4:03   (GM To Ulm): A speaking stone, used to commune with the dead, the spirits who keep them, and the Lords of darkness”

Ulm gets down and grabs the orb carefully.

4:03   (GM To Ulm): you feel power throbbing in the ball; like a pulse from a mighty beast, tingling your magical aura

Ken (GM) thunder rolls again, echoing ominously overhead

Gray moves closer. “I’m not sure I trust Ulm with such a thing.”

4:04 Bomrek: “Shaman, what does it do?”

4:04 Ulm: “Ah, it is an old speaking stone. It is used to commune with . . . ” He takes a pause and shivers. “Someone powerful lives within it. This stone is used to speak with it.”

4:05   (GM To Ulm): you’ve never held one, but you’re sure you could bloody your grasp and call its power, to speak with the powers

4:05 Ulm: “I can gain audience with it, I know the required rituals.”

[We call the session at this point, discussing the nature of Ulm’s power (which was an Ally he summons with a reaction roll influence-able by sacrifices made in the summoning. This sparks a small discussion on the Beastman prisoner, and a bit of OOC joking about building a cage, dwarf fortress style to haul around with prisoners. Ultimately, the point becomes moot. Due to a scheduling conflict with other games, Ulm’s player cant make the weekly game, and bows out. More importantly, the crystal will come into play, Next Time]
